Giving the Green Some Love

The bowling green is the heart of our game a beautifully kept surface that lets us enjoy bowls at its best. Of course, after a busy season (and the occasional wood bouncing across it like a rogue cannonball), the green deserves a little TLC to stay in top condition. That’s where seasonal renovation comes in, ensuring the grass is cared for and ready to welcome us back next season.

What Does Renovation Involve?

Renovating the green isn’t just a matter of giving it a trim and a pat on the back. It’s a careful process that includes aeration, topdressing, and overseeding.

  • Aeration - loosens compacted soil and lets the roots breathe.

  • Topdressing - smooths out the surface and adds nutrients.

  • Overseeding - encourages lush, even growth, (because patches are only fashionable on old jeans, not bowling greens!)

Together, these steps restore the green and keep it match‑ready.

Timing is Everything

The best time for renovation is autumn, once the competitive season winds down. This year, Paul and his trusty helpers were straight out there scarifying and aerating as soon as the last bowl was delivered. With warm weather and September rain lending a hand, the soil had just the right recipe for recovery. By winter, the roots were already settling in for a strong start next spring.

Thanks to the Green Team

While we’re indoors waiting for the outdoor season to return, it’s worth remembering how much effort goes into keeping our green in top shape. We’re lucky to have our dedicated and efficient Green Ranger, Club Chair Paul Levick, who is often supported by a band of regular helpers. Thanks to his dedication and their support, we’ll be stepping back onto a surface that’s as smooth and inviting as ever.

And just remember next season, when you’re tempted to drop your woods with a thud… spare a thought for the grass!
