Congratulations to Bowls Devon Ladies for winning the Johns Trophy
And it’s congratulations to our own Val Davis and Ella Crouch who played in the final. Devon played Surrey in the final at Leamington Spa on Sunday 2nd September running out close winners by 2 shots, 113-111. It was a roller-coaster game with Devon taking a early lead, 8 shots up after 5 ends. Devon were 6 up after 10 but then Surrey fought back to lead by 13 after 15 and 12 after 18 ends. A strong finish by Devon resulted in the final 2 shot victory.
It’s been a good season
It all started with Ella Crouch winning the Devon County Under 25 Ladies 4 Wood competition at Kings on Saturday 22nd May. Ella played Emma Cooper in the final and ran out the winner 21-19. The photo shows Ella receiving her trophy from Ladies County President Christine Marshall. Don’t forget to look out for Ella at Leamington later in the year.
Not content with that Ella playing with Natalie Heath on Sunday 13th June ran out the winners of the Section 6 Ladies Major County Pairs. This put them in the last 16 for the County. They will be taking on a pair from Plympton on a neutral green on 12th July. They won through to the Quarter-final at Exonia on 14th July where they lost by just 2 shots (14-16) to a pair from Tiverton West End. Well done, it was excellent to go so far.
The men have also enjoyed success with Tim Lock, Geoff Gay and Gerry Coffield winning the Section 6 Group A Mens Major Triples which puts them in the last 16 in the County. The final rounds for Group B were played at Culm Vale on Saturday 17th July. After two convincing wins our trio lost by just 1 shot in the Group B Final, a great effort.
Thats not all, the above three plus Tony Crispin have won through to the Mens Major Fours Group A finals day. The final rounds were played at Madeira on 31st July. Our rink won one round but lost in the quarter-final to the eventual winners, another great effort.
Sarah Vinnicombe has won through to the last 16 of the Ladies 2 Wood Singles. The final rounds were played at Culm Vale on 8th August. Sarah won one round but lost in the quarter-final. Well done Sarah.
Both the Men’s and Ladies Club sides have also done well. The ladies reached the final of the Devon Ladies Senior Fours, losing in the final to Barnstaple. The men take on Shaldon in the semi final of the Foxlands. This has been put back to 2022, one to look out for at the start of next year.
Liz Lock and Val Davis reached the final of the Devon County Ladies Over 55 Pairs on 18th September at Crediton where they lost by just 2 shots to a pair from South Molton.
Commiserations and Congratulations to our ladies who on Monday 20th September made to the final of the Devon Ladies Interclub competition at Crediton where they lost to Topsham. Disappointed not to retain the title but a brilliant effort.
For 2021 the club’s charity remains Devon Air Ambulance. There will be plenty of opportunities to donate to this great cause throughout the year.
