Welcome to Torquay Bowling Club
Coronavirus Latest (Last updated 9 July 18:30)
Thank you for giving your views to the committee member who contacted you recently concerning the remainder of the season. Here is the latest Coronavirus update and the results of the consultation.
Re COVID 19 ADDITIONAL GUIDANCE FOR LAWN BOWLS ISSUED BY BOWLS ENGLAND 2 JULY 2020
There has been a further easing by the Government affecting Lawn Bowls, the main points are as follows.
Whilst there has been a relaxation by the Government on this subject, both BE and TBC recommend that players maintain a social distance of 2M.
Avoid it, stay as you are, our cleaning system for both Jacks and Mats remains and works.
Apart from the use of Toilet facilities, via the corridor, the remainder of the building remains out of bounds.
The relaxation now allows 30 people to be on the premises at any one time.
This now is actually written into law,
For clarity and to give an example,if we had set out 8 rinks in order to utilise 5 rinks playing triples, and we had two or three spectators that wanted to watch, or indeed a couple of non playing club members, this would not be allowed, and we would be breaking the law. 30 means 30.
NHS TRACK AND TRACE
The committee have already put in place a system concerning any visitors or spectators that may visit the club during the roll up periods.
There is a book for recording the details of these people that has been placed next to the First Aid Box ,adjacent to the Rink Booking File in the corridor leading to the Ladies and gents Toilets.
These details will be taken and actioned by the Steward of the day.
RINK BOOKING SYSTEM
This system is currently working well, and must remain in place.
CLEANLINESS OF FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT.
We continue to ensure that the facilities currently available to our members are kept clean with Hygiene as a priority. A cleaner visits the club 2/3 times a week and ensures that the Toilets in particular are kept as clean as possible.Hand Sanitisers are available in the Ladies, the Gents, and the Disabled Toilet.
These Bulletins will continue, and changes are most likely, we will however keep you informed.
Please check back regularly.
CLUB NEWS UPDATE AS AT 9th July
Following the recent ‘ring around’ carried out by our Committee members to 94 club members, we can report the following.
CHRISTMAS DINNER AT LIVERMEAD CLIFF HOTEL
We had a 78% favourable response to this question, and to such end have made a provisional booking for approx 65 Persons.
No deposit was made and like everything at this moment in time, things may change!
PLAY FRIENDLIES AGAINST LOCAL CLUBS—-NOT TOURERS
84% Supported this idea, and as a result we have made tentative bookings as follows.
Sunday 23rd August versus Hatherleigh at 2pm 4 rinks of Triples, i.e.12 players per club.
Eating, Heating, and Seating will be fine tuned nearer the date, but at all times having regard for the covid situation current at the time.Dress code whites, if they still fit!
Monday August 24th versus Marldon, exactly the same format as above.
Tuesday !st September versus Babbacombe, same format again.
There may be another, but we will let you know in plenty of time.
A suggestion was made as to our extending the season into the first week of October, and which was felt by our Green Team to not be a problem. So that may go ahead.
The Committee Nomination Sheets are up in the usual place in the corridor
The AGM is in the Clubhouse on Friday 13th Nov 7:00 pm for 7:30 pm
The Club Fun Day-c/w cream tea is booked for Sunday 13th Sept. May have to be two sessions because of allowable numbers,or indeed over two days. It would be good to have such a day as we could all do with a break from this virus thing. Will keep you posted.
2021 Opening Day is booked for Sunday 18th April.
WORKS AT THE CLUB- A BIG SHOUT OUT
For those of you who have not been down recently,it is worth a trip just to have a look at the way the green looks after all the hard work put in by Ray Mitchell, Tony C, Derick Murgatroyd, Alan Stephenson, and Alan Hewitt and it plays even better than it looks, and it just has to be the best in the Bay and probably further afield as well.!
Have a look at the Green Surrounds, resplendent with their new metal colours, courtesy of Geoff Gay and Tony, have a look at the newly painted clubhouse externally, courtesy of Roger Evans, Have a look at the Water Tank surround, newly timber faced, and stained, courtesy of Geoff Gay and when you can get in to the Club house Lounge, have a look at all the new Trophy Cabinets, and the re-siting of Honours Boards , Shields and Plaques, courtesy of Alan Hewitt.
We must really be so very grateful to these people.
In conclusion the roll ups are well attended and we believe appreciated, with us now averaging about 70 person roll ups per week,it would have been a few more but for the weather at times
The green is open for individuals, singles, pairs and triples – book your rink before coming to the club
Please remember, only phone Di to book a rink between 9:00 and 10:30 am each day.
You can now check to see if a rink is available for any day, including the day you phone.
You don’t have to play before making your next booking. If available you can have more than one rink booking in a week. If demand for rinks increases significantly this will be reviewed.
Coronavirus has given the unscrupulous a whole lot of ways to try and rob the unwary and we all need to watch out for fake emails and text messages. Be very sure you want to before clicking on an attachment or a link. Here is the latest message from Action Fraud Police.
Watch out for scam messages:
Don’t click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails, and never respond to unsolicited messages and calls that ask for your personal or financial details.
If you’re making a purchase from a company or person you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first, and ask a friend or family member for advice before completing the purchase. If you decide to go ahead with the purchase, use a credit card if you have one, as most major credit card providers insure online purchases.

Devon Air Ambulance Base2Base virtual challenge
Our charity for 2020 is the Devon Air Ambulance. Sadly due to the coronavirus restriction we are going to be unable as a club to raise funds in the normal way.
For anyone that would like to support them they are holding the Base2Base virtual challenge between 1st and 21st June, where you walk 40 miles between those dates. See the full details on their website here.
The Coasters do the double
After winning the Torbay Short Mat League Cup on Saturday 29th February at the Derwent, the Coasters, a team of current and former club members have gone on to win the Torbay Short Mat League. Well done to you all.
Congratulations to Ella
We all know that Ella Crouch had a very good summer. Well, she continues to do well indoors this winter. She is through to the final of the Devon County Under 21 Singles which were due to be played at the County Finals Day in Axminster on Sunday 19th April. Not surprisingly County Finals Day has fallen victim to Coronavirus and Finals Day will be rearranged when possible.
For 2020 the club’s charity is Devon Air Ambulance. There will be plenty of opportunities to donate to this great cause throughout the year.
