The 2021 Fixture List

The 2021 Fixture List has been updated (4 May 2021) and can be viewed here. Because the fixtures keep changing, hopefully not many more times, for reasons beyond our control it has been decided not to issue members with a fixture book in 2021. Copies of the fixtures will be on display in the Club House as well as here on the web site.

These past months have certainly been very upsetting and it is good to know that we are on the road to recovery at last.

It was very heart warming to see so many happy faces at the opening day and we actually had sunshine as well, got to be a bonus.

There are many people to praise during these trying times, your green looks and plays wonderfully well.

Your committee have worked very hard to ensure that you have a club, as well as a green, to return to. At the heart of this committee has been one person who has gone above and beyond all that could be expected of anyone, that is your club captain, Eric Leason.

Eric has spent the entire pandemic sourcing information from the Government, Bowls England and Bowls Devon and bringing this information to the committee so that we can find a course of action to keep our club alive and out of debt. He works tirelessly, and I do not use the word lightly, to ensure that you are all able to play as safely as possible.

We owe Eric a huge debt of gratitude, not forgetting all the other people who have given their time and energy. So I ask you to follow the rules set down by the club please and remember that in two weeks’ time we shall have more restrictions lifted and playing will become a great deal easier.

It will be good to have you all back and in good health.

Best wishes. Beryl Leach (Chairman)

On Sunday 25th April, the club held it’s 2021 Opening Day event, and what a day it was.

Such a pleasure to see old friends again, and be able to report that on the day some 52 members played, spread over both an a.m. and p.m. session, to accord with Government and Bowls England guidance, and all with big grins on their faces playing on a Green that was simply magnificent, it played as if it was July, not April, it was fast, flat and true, and as a result received nothing but praise from all who played.

Here at TBC, we recognise and understand that despite everything else we may have, we are nothing without our Green, and what a Green we have.

As a result we all owe our Green Team lead by Tony Crispin and Ray Mitchell, together with their superb squad of volunteers, who have all worked so very hard in the background for months over the winter period, in all weathers, at all times working within the Bowls England Guidance surrounding the rules of Essential Green Maintenance our most grateful thanks.

Not only have they produced a masterpiece in the colour Green, but have also completely re-worked the Rose beds, pruned trees, de-mossed the perimeter walkways, repaired, replaced, and re-painted all the Bench Seating, weeded the car park, cut all the perimeter hedges, and refurbished all the Pushers and Scoreboards, and last but not least, provided a lovely commemorative area honouring our much loved Head Greenkeeper, ’Mal’ Williams.

To make for a memorable ‘Opening Day’, memorable people are are needed, and our playing members provided just that, therefore thank you all for playing the game under the ‘Covid’ rules, not a grumble or whinge was heard.

Thank you to our President Mike Reynolds for taking on the ‘Rolling In’ duties, thereby opening the club for the season.

Big Thank You to the ladies who provided all the players in both sessions with complimentary Tea/Coffee and biscuits, again strictly complying with the relevant  ‘Covid Rules’.

Due to the SDL, MDL and RMTL cancelling /postponing their respective leagues for this season – (The men’s Over 55’s appear unaffected)-it has been agreed that in order to give members a chance of some form of competitive league type play then we will be playing these fixtures as ‘Friendlies’ wherever possible. The methodology and format of play may well be affected, but at this moment in time it is a bit too early to provide you with hard and fast rules, please bear with us for a period of time whilst we put it all together, however, we are as confident as we can be that competitive bowls will be played this season.

As you know, nationally the Covid rules are programmed/forecast to change on May 17th and further on June 21st,the third and final steps respectively.

Our Club Competitions, together with the MDL Singles, Pairs, Triples and Cup competitions are at this moment in time unaffected.

For County and National competitions, please refer to the postings currently in place at the Club.

Concerning visiting Touring Teams, as you know we have historically been delighted to have welcomed many clubs during any given season, and whilst a number have had to cancel, things look a lot more healthy from late June onwards.

The Riviera Tournament that we co-host with Victoria and Kings, is going ahead as planned, which is good news all round.

The much postponed Christmas Luncheon, will probably now go ahead as a late summer event, in a different format, we will keep you updated as and when restrictions are lifted.  On the subject of Social activities, we are working in the background with a view to maybe re-opening things later in the year, again ,along with Short Mat–‘watch this space’

Club Charity

For 2021 the club’s charity remains Devon Air Ambulance. There will be plenty of opportunities to donate to this great cause throughout the year.
