Torquay Bowling Club was delighted to open its doors on Saturday 13th June to the Torbay Diabetes Nurses from Torbay NHS Foundation Trust for a special afternoon of bowling, conversation, and community connection. Sixteen nurses joined us on the day, many of whom were trying the sport for the very first time. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and it wasn’t long before the green was full of laughter, friendly competition, and plenty of curious questions about the game.

A large number of our members came along to support the session, offering coaching, guidance, and good‑natured encouragement throughout. From demonstrating the basics to sharing tips on technique, our volunteers helped create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where everyone felt confident to give bowling a go. Several consultants also joined in, adding to the sense of camaraderie and shared experience.

Halfway through the afternoon, everyone paused for a well earned cream tea. Over scones, jam, and cream (in the correct Devon order, of course), members and nurses had the chance to chat, strengthening the links between our club and the local NHS teams who do so much for our community.

The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved. For our members, it was a pleasure to introduce a new group of people to the sport we love. For the nurses, it offered a rare opportunity to unwind, try something different, and enjoy time together away from the pressures of their vital work.

We very much hope to welcome the Torbay Diabetes Nurses back again next year. Their energy, kindness, and willingness to dive into the spirit of the afternoon made the event a real highlight of our season.
