Short Mat and Coronavirus

It is intended to run a Short Mat Club Pairs Competition in winter 1920/21 as the Coronavirus rules make it impossible to run the normal leagues, competitions and roll-ups. There will only be one mat used which will give players plenty of social distancing room. The Short Mat was stopped for the duration on the Lockdown and will resume as soon as it is allowed.

Short Mat in a ‘normal’ year
The Torquay Bowling Club short mat season is played during the winter months and is a very busy one.

The Club operates two short mat rinks. The two original mats were purchased in the winter of 1984/1985. In the early years the mats were used mainly for friendly games and for social evenings on Fridays and Saturdays. However the popularity of the short mat game spread quickly among social clubs in the area and in 1988 the Torbay Short Mat League was formed. The Club became affiliated to the English and County Short Mat Bowling Associations in the same year

The League consists of nine teams and the matches are played on Monday evenings and on some Tuesday evenings. An internal Club Pairs league takes place on Wednesday afternoons and the Club Triples league on Wednesday evenings. Friday afternoons are reserved for friendly open roll-ups.

Playing in the Leagues and other fixtures is open to Associate Members as well as Full Playing Members of the club.

Over the years the Club has entertained many Touring Short Mat teams and this is an increasing feature of the winter season. The Club will always welcome visiting teams.
